How to Open DOCX Files
Files with the DOCX extension are default output documents created with Microsoft Word 2007. This is the new file extension used by Microsoft Office as a result of its binary file format to XML format transition.
Users who still have previous versions of Microsoft Office may find it possible to open files with the extension DOCX when an add-on tool from Microsoft or other applications are installed. The additional software is necessary because the information in the DOCX file is stored in XML or in a plain text format. The following programs should be installed to open, edit, or convert DOCX files:
MS Windows
- Word 2000, 2003 and XP with Compatibility Pack
- OxygenOffice Professional
- Panergy docXConverter
- NativeWinds DocxRtf
- OpenOffice.org with Odf-Converter
- Microsoft Word 2007
Mac OSX
- Panergy docXConverter
- Apple Pages
- Microsoft Word 2008
Linux:
- OpenOffice.org with Odf-Converter
- OxygenOffice Professional
There are instances when DOCX files among other formats cannot be opened, edited, converted, or created. Slow loading and opening of such DOCX files and other formats as well as other system performance issues also frequently happen on computers of users with corrupted, damaged, or fragmented System Registry entries and keys. This is because the Windows registry is your PC’s storage area of all information about:
- system configuration settings;
- system hardware data;
- network and system settings; and
- user profiles.
This means every user activity adds a key or an entry to the Windows registry. The Windows System Registry gets fragmented after long use and regular program installations, uninstallations, and reinstallations. Unnecessary entries and keys are often left out by improperly uninstalled applications. Malicious programs may damage, corrupt, or even create malicious keys and entries in the System Registry.
Registry cleaners help optimize the Windows System Registry. It defragments entries and keys in the System Registry for easier extraction by the OS whenever it needs to access the System Registry data. These registry cleaners also allow users to select the entries and keys to remove or repair in the System Registry after it has detected various items upon the initialization of its automatic scanning engine.
Regular System Registry cleanups can correct slow loading and initialization of DOCX files among other formats. Other system performance troubles can also be corrected without the risk of damaging the System Registry beyond repair because of manual optimization methods done by users with little or no experience and knowledge in handling the System Registry or other specialized OS maintenance procedures. However, carefully choose the registry cleaner for your machine by considering the compatibility support it provides users with similar OS versions, the functions it offers, software developer reputation, user comments, reviews from established institutions, and industry popularity.
