The Djvu or djv extension function is marketed by LizardTech Inc., and is a technology for image compression developed at AT&T that provides for online distribution of images of exceptionally high resolution like photographs, digital documents, and scanned documents.

The implementation of this file that is (GPL enabled) open source is known as djvuLibre that includes utilities, simple encoders, decoders, browser plug-ins, and viewers. The Windows program for printing and viewing djvu documents is WinDJView, which is based around the DjVuLibre library. The user community for djvu is the djvu Zone, and is non-commercial. Content developers of high-resolution pages of color in catalogs, magazines, and books can scan these images and publish them on the internet due to the higher capacity of Djvu compression. It can compress documents that are in color between five and ten times more than gif or jpeg file compression, and between three and eight times more than tiff file compression for white and black documents. It is opened in the Mac OS through MacDjView and a web browser using the plug-in for LizardTech DjVu, while on Windows; it is opened using Lizardtech DjVu Solo and a web browser with the plug-in for LizardTech DjVu.

This file extension also stores scanned images bitmaps, especially those containing line drawings and text. The technologies used by this file extension include monochrome image lossy compression, arithmetic coding, progressive loading, and separation of image layers of images/background and text. This file function is increasingly vital due to its utilization in the ‘One Laptop Per Child’ project and the Million Book Project. Djvu can be viewed as an option to PDF because it compresses files more than PDF. Djvu may contain a text layer of OCRed, making it simpler to perform text search and cut and paste operations.

The best program to read/open/run Djvu files is named DJVU READER, and its plug-in is downloadable in order to enable the printing service or download the plug-in for the djvu browser on the LizardTech Inc, website. These files are marginally smaller but deliver images enriched with associated text at a higher resolution.
