Do you have to type text in languages other than English on a frequent basis? Typing text in other languages using an English keyboard can be a royal pain in the neck for most users. However, there are a few ways to circumvent the problem if you use Microsoft Windows operating system. Let’s have a look at all these options.

In order to access Character Map, click on the Start button, then click on Accessories, System Tools, and finally on Character Map. This feature is available on both Windows XP and Vista. When the tool opens up, you will see a box with lots of symbols in it, along with an option to select the font (through a drop down menu) towards the top. You should choose the font that you are using for the main document. The box will display hundreds of characters in a table, along with scroll bars on the right hand side, so that you can scroll through the massive list of symbols and select the required characters. You can insert either specific symbols or entire words into your document using the Character Map. When you finish creating an entire word in the Character map, click the button named Copy to copy the word, and then paste the word in the main document. There may be a few extra spaces either at the beginning or at the end of the document. In that case, use the Backspace or Delete key to remove those spaces.

If you use just a few accented characters on a regular basis, you may use keyboard shortcuts for entering those characters into a document. First, make a list of the number codes of those characters. You can find a complete list of number codes for all characters of all European languages in the Vistawide website: www.snipurl.com/aldti. Once you have found out the codes for the characters that you use frequently, the rest is easy. Simply turn on Num Lock in your keyboard. Then, hold down the left Alt key, and press the numeric code corresponding to that character using the numeric keypad. Let go of Alt key when you are done, and the character will appear in the document.

If you are using Microsoft Word, there is an even easier way of accomplishing this. If you wish to use an accented character, hold down the Ctrl key on the keyboard and press the apostrophe key. Now, let go of Ctrl, and press the key of the character. This trick also works with almost all punctuation marks.

If you wish to type out long passages of text in foreign languages, you can modify the keyboard layout in the Control Panel and choose the language in which you wish to type text. You can stick temporary labels on the keyboard in order to remember which key stands for which character. That way, you will be able to type in foreign languages in a much easier manner.

In any of these ways, you can solve the problem of typing in a foreign language using an English language keyboard.

‘Free Lossless Audio Codec’ is the name behind the acronym FLAC, which is itself a file extension. As the name suggests, it is a sound storage application that works on the same basis as MP3 but retains all the content’s quality thus it has been branded ‘lossless’.

It has found its way into many sound recording and playing devices that find its compression capability and other attributes adequate for their operation. Although it is not stated who made the file extension FLAC, records indicate that Xiphophorous, currently referred to as the Xiph.Org Foundation claims ownership rights for this process.

FLAC performs very many functions in a large number of devices and programs in different operating systems. It is widely used for the encoding of audio content and is relied upon to play these files by decoding the stored information. Other uses include hardware support for various devices such as the iPod, Microsoft Xbox, Sony Play Station, mobile phones and NMT players. At the same time it is also deployed in the Embedded Waveplayer, Sonos, Slim Devices, Olive and iAudio. To carry out these operations successfully, FLAC works by ripping, encoding and decoding all of which are done differently in different operating systems such as Mac Os, Windows and Linux. It has also established a reputation for being one of the swiftest and lossless audio codecs that is most widely supported.

The most appropriate way to access and use FLAC is by downloading it from the internet and then installing it on one’s computer. The installation and storage of FLAC may differ according to the operating system in which it is being used. When using Windows, one should opt for an installation package with the corresponding commands and tools. The directory in use should set up FLAC as an executable file. In Linux, FLAC is usually installed as part of the Fedora project or as one of the Debian packages. In Macintosh, One can use FLACer or tools for the operating system where the .dmg file installs the application while the .tar.gz file is used to run it. Once installed, FLAC should be used to create and play files concerning the operating system provisions and software packages therein.

The usage of FLAC exposes the user to very few errors in comparison to other packages running the same tasks. Errors will usually occur when the user tries to run FLAC files using another application. Furthermore, one should not use FLAC to play a file that is neither valid nor music supported as it will generate an error. In some programs, the operating system may not allow for conversion of content such as the transfer of CDs into FLAC files in some Windows applications especially WMP, therefore trying such an action will generate errors.

The Djvu or djv extension function is marketed by LizardTech Inc., and is a technology for image compression developed at AT&T that provides for online distribution of images of exceptionally high resolution like photographs, digital documents, and scanned documents.

The implementation of this file that is (GPL enabled) open source is known as djvuLibre that includes utilities, simple encoders, decoders, browser plug-ins, and viewers. The Windows program for printing and viewing djvu documents is WinDJView, which is based around the DjVuLibre library. The user community for djvu is the djvu Zone, and is non-commercial. The MIME type of this file is image/vnd.djvu, and the identifying characters are Hex: 41 54 26 54 46 4F 52 4D 00 and ASCII: AT&TFORM.

Content developers of high-resolution pages of color in catalogs, magazines, and books can scan these images and publish them on the internet due to the higher capacity of Djvu compression. It can compress documents that are in color between five and ten times more than gif or jpeg file compression, and between three and eight times more than tiff file compression for white and black documents. The file type for this file function is djvu image or Bitmap Image Type and is categorized as a Raster Image File. It is not commonly used and is pronounced d?j?nu. It is opened in the Mac OS through MacDjView and a web browser using the plug-in for LizardTech DjVu, while on Windows; it is opened using Lizardtech DjVu Solo and a web browser with the plug-in for LizardTech DjVu.

This file extension also stores scanned images bitmaps, especially those containing line drawings and text. The technologies used by this file extension include monochrome image lossy compression, arithmetic coding, progressive loading, and separation of image layers of images/background and text. This file function is increasingly vital due to its utilization in the ‘One Laptop Per Child’ project and the Million Book Project. Djvu can be viewed as an option to PDF because it compresses files more than PDF. Djvu may contain a text layer of OCRed, making it simpler to perform text search and cut and paste operations.

The best program to read/open/run Djvu files is named DJVU READER, and its plug-in is downloadable in order to enable the printing service or download the plug-in for the djvu browser on the LizardTech Inc, website. These files are marginally smaller but deliver images enriched with associated text at a higher resolution.

Divx means digital video express. This is a codec that is used to compress videos for easier transfer over the Internet without affecting the visibility and the audio quality of the video. It is a software that is also used to compress movies on a VHS tape to fit in a smaller storage device like a DVD.

It is also used to compress movies from a DVD to fit in a smaller storage device for instance a CD thus it is very important in the movie industry. It does not affect the contents of the movie thus the movie quality remains the same. It is the preferred software that is used to fit a complete movie series onto a DVD.

Computer experts have taken advantage of this codec, as they are using it to post full videos on the Internet pages, and they can easily transfer movies across the Internet within minutes. This has made it easier for people to transact in the movie business since movies are sent online. This codec is essentially useful as it allows user to access the latest movies in the shortest time possible over the Internet. Thus, the compression capability available for this codec has made it a favorite among movie enthusiast.

Divx software can work with different computer operating systems and this is an advantage since most of codecs are limited to a certain operating system. The software can be purchased and installed on a computer. The Divx software is also used to make and edit videos and this makes it one of the best video softwares in the world. It uses the AVI file format whose files have an .AVI or a .DIVX extension though the AVI is only used for audio files. The Divx takes 60.77 MB of the computer memory and thus if one does not have enough disc space they should upgrade before they install the software to avoid slowing down of computer operations or using up of the entire computer space.

It is a copyright version of Microsoft’s MPEG - 4 though it has a proprietary license and it is legal since open sale in it is allowed. Most people prefer it since its modification enables the user to perform all movie commands without necessarily changing or adding to the settings. If the file comes in a corrupt version that does not perform the video commands, it should be deleted or destroyed to upgrade the memory and maximize CPU usage.

CSV is a common comma separated value file belonging to the Data Files category. It contains sets of data that are separated using commas and every new line is a representation of another row. The values are arranged in cells using a spreadsheet program or alternatively they are entered in a database.

To open the file on Windows Operating System, programs to use include text editor, Microsoft Excel or any other type of spreadsheet. In Windows Operating system, use text editor or Microsoft excel to open the file. The file normally comprises columns titled ModifiedDate, SpecialId, ProductModelId and Name. Microsoft Excel automatically converts the data columns in a format it deems best for easy opening of the comma-separated files.

Comma Separated Value files are text editable and contain a record holding field values for each line. This file format is common for exchange of data between spreadsheet and database systems. To ensure that your system optimizes memory, PC and CPU settings, run a performance scan.

Two file types have the CSV extension file name; they include the Boso View Express railway structure file and the EGA/VGA palette adjusted by CompuShow. If Windows or Mac OS fail to open this file, check if your system has the proper reading program installed. Alternatively, there might be an error with the registry system, run a registry scan to get rid of any errors related to the CSV file. More file extension errors can be caused by incorrect associations, therefore, regularly scan the system to identify and prevent any file-associated errors.

CSV file extension users are recommended to run performance scans to optimize the usage of the file. To ensure that the system is stable, fix all CSV errors and scan for outdated drivers to avoid slowdowns and system errors. This file format ignores trailing and leading space-characters close to separators of comma fields. Delimit fields that have embedded commas using double-quotes. Those fields that already have double-quotes should be surrounded by double quotes again.

Comma separated value files are becoming obsolete because of possibilities for XML data exchange. However, they are vital for exchange of data over similar applications. Programs like OpenOffice, Calc and KSpread also commonly use the file. Different applications use this file format differently, sometimes because of bugs in the programs. However, most applications use the appropriate CSV standard that requires each line to have text strings, embedded double quotes, and embedded commas and embedded line breaks.

CTT is one of the file extensions that inform operating systems about a particular file. This file extension is connected to the contact file format in MS Windows Live Messenger. Microsoft Live Messenger enables people to make free calls to PCs and make affordable calls to phones.

It is one of the world’s largest networks. CTT helps in putting contact together without having to use multiple accounts. The extension file exports and imports contacts from the Live Messenger. It stores lists of various groups and contacts used by Live Messenger or MSN instant messaging programs. One of the applications, which are associated to CTT file extension, is notepad. Notepad supports different programming languages that run under MS Windows. Some of its features include multi-document and auto-completion.

CTT is an XML file and can therefore be viewed with a notepad and other such text editors. Microsoft software uses CCT as a proprietary file-format. This file extension is formatted using XML and is saved as text file. It can be derived or exported from the MSN messenger to be imported by any other user. All the contacts that are saved in the CTT file extension can be transferred or imported to the messenger by selecting the file known as “import contacts from a saved file”. To open a file using CTT file extension requires using export or import commands, which are either in contacts or file menu within the Messenger. To convert or edit a file with CTT requires use of any text or XML editor. The older versions used text to open while the newer versions use XML.

Some of the problems related to CTT extension files include difficulty accessing different types of files or the computer becoming lower or unstable than it should be which can even lead to crashes. Registry booster scans can go a long way in identifying the problem with systems registry. Other related errors include the inability of Windows to open the CTT file. This is an indication that the appropriate program has not been installed or it may have an error related to registry. It is highly recommended that in such a case the user runs a free registry scan to check for or prevent any related errors. Some of the recommendations made to CTT file extension are on how to increase performance. Users are advised to run a performance scan, which is actually free to optimize CPU usage and memory.

ASP file extension is a web file belonging to the Microsoft Active Server Page category. ASP stands for Active Server Pages. The file is a web page that is server generated using ActiveX scripting.

The ASP code is normally processed on the server for the Web. The resultant HTML code is then sent to the Web browser for the user. This file is used in creating Webpage content and websites that are dynamically generated.

Some of the programs that open this file include any Web browsers for a Mac Operating System and any Web browsers for Windows Operating System. The file can contain HTML scripts and tags or text whose execution takes place on the web server. To operate the file effectively, one requires some basic understanding on XHTML, HTML or scripting languages such as VBScript and JavaScript.

The Active Server Pages program runs in the Internet information Services (ISS). ISS always accompanies Windows 2000 and is also an element of Windows NT 4.0 Option pack, which is downloadable from Microsoft. Whenever browsers make a request for the file, the server should return the file. When a request is made, ISS will pass the request to an ASP engine that in return reads every line of the file before executing the scripts inside the file. The file is finally taken back to the browser in the form of a plain HTML file.

The browser displaying the file must not support scripting since the execution of the script is done on the server. It is possible to change, add or edit content on the web page. One could also respond to data or queries that are submitted through HTML forms. The file is made up of applications compiled into intermediary formats, which can run on web servers and generate web pages. To aid in optimizing CPU, PC and memory settings, run a performance scan on your system.

To view the ASP file directly from the Internet through a HTTP protocol, it is necessary to use whichever common browser at one’s reach. Applications for Web development such as Microsoft Visual Studio or Text editor software are used to edit the file or its source code. Microsoft Internet explorer is the common Internet browser used because it offers improved navigation via advanced printing, tabbed browsing, easy discovery and web searching using the toolbar. Always scan the system for any errors related to ASP.

Files with the extension .sis are used to install applications, games and other software into Symbian OS-based mobile phones like Nokia, Sony-Ericsson, and Motorola. The installation is done from a PC with the use of an accessory data cable or through infrared or Bluetooth technology.

In order to create a .sis file, one should have the proper software installed. Examples of these are CreateSIS and MakeSIS. A file with the .sis extension is not the installer itself but just a packaging for the real program written in a .pkg file. All the commands are indicated in this text file, allowing the Symbian Operating System in the phone to instantly recognize and install the application or program upon receipt.

It is through the development of .sis files that new applications and games are created for mobile phones using the Symbian OS. Examples of applications are the ones that:

help you tweak your cell phone;

explore its contents;

and create the possibility of new uses for the phone.

Files with the extension .sis are also essential components of games developed for mobile phones and packaged for installation. Game files come with the .sis extension and are easily installed once received on the phone through wired or wireless data transfer methods from a pc as mentioned above.

As in all file incarnations, be it for the personal computer or the cellular phone, the possibility of a virus infection is always there. Viruses for cellular phones are also plentiful. They have the potential to infect and cause much damage once installed through a .sis file in your cell phone since it automatically installs once received. It is very important to scan .sis files before sending them to your cellular phones. Be sure that your computer’s antivirus is updated before you scan the .sis file.

There are many files with the .sis extension that improperly install themselves or do not install at all. If the files are like this, one should consider problems with file associations. Thus, there is a need to use a registry cleaner. Registry cleaners are programs that find bad or file association issues and select them for deletion while simultaneously repairing malfunctioning file associations not synchronized with each other. A registry cleaner can provide solutions to improperly working .sis files. This means the next time the file is sent to your cellular phone, it must install itself the way it should.
